Choosing a porcelain countertop: slab and fabrication details

A porcelain countertop decision is about more than pattern. Slab thickness, handling, cut-out geometry, edge work and support structure should be planned together.

Confirm the exact porcelain slab specifications

Appearance, format, thickness and approved applications vary across porcelain collections. MSI Stile's manufacturer page lists options for its own range; those details should not automatically be applied to other brands.

Request the manufacturer, product code, colour/pattern, thickness, slab format, approved uses and current care guide in writing. Review a physical sample under the kitchen lighting and approve the direction of the veining and surface finish.

Address vulnerable cut-outs from the design stage

Specify sink and hob openings, corner radii, edge profiles, under-slab support and seams on the drawing. Large openings, thin sections and overhangs must follow the product's fabrication instructions; the fabricator should approve the cutting and installation plan in advance.

Slabs can be large and difficult to handle. Plan delivery route, upright handling/storage, site access and installation crew before fabrication. Use the guide for the selected thickness and product.

Compare care and total project cost by product

Follow the manufacturer's current care document for routine cleaning, hot cookware, chemical exposure and repair. The generic term porcelain does not by itself guarantee a particular warranty or scratch/heat performance.

Compare slab, pattern matching, cutting, edge work, delivery, installation and reasonable breakage allowance as separate items. HMM kitchen archive photographs are illustrative and are not claimed to show the selected porcelain product.

Pre-order checklist

Before ordering, record the manufacturer or seller, exact series and colour code, slab thickness, dimensions and batch in writing. The current datasheet and care guide should identify the same product as the quotation. Review a physical sample in both daylight and the project’s artificial lighting. A catalogue image alone does not prove product identity, exact colour or a completed project reference.

Mark wall returns, sink and hob cut-outs, seams, internal corners, edge profile and overhangs on the installation drawing. Cutting, support and bonding must follow the selected slab’s fabrication guide. Check separately whether site templating, material, cut-outs, delivery, removal and installation are included in the quotation.

The order approval should record the colour/series, dimensions, installation scope and target delivery date. Document the product warranty separately from workmanship coverage, and include care instructions and an after-sales contact in the handover file.
