Choosing a custom counter for hotels and restaurants

Plan a counter around more than its front elevation: consider user flow, service operations, accessibility, cleaning and installation conditions together.

Define how the counter will be used

A hotel reception, restaurant service counter, bar, payment point and welcome desk may look similar but support different workflows. Map staff needs for waiting, payments, documents, POS devices, cables and storage alongside visitor approaches and queue space. Mark which tasks happen at each part of the counter during a typical day.

When staff and visitor flows are clear, height, depth, service openings and back-counter storage can be planned more appropriately. Before measuring, record doors, columns, sockets, fire exits and fixed equipment. Review the architectural plan with electrical and lighting needs and any applicable operating standards.

Base the material decision on product documents

Acrylic solid surface, quartz and other surface products differ in composition, fabrication and care. The Corian® manufacturer's reception-counter page shows applications for its own product family; it does not establish identical performance for every brand or counter. State the exact product name, application class, thickness and manufacturer's technical data sheet in the quotation pack.

For busy commercial use, compare documents on scratches, impact, chemical cleaning, heat, staining and care frequency. Do not decide from broad words such as 'durable' or 'hygienic' alone. Request the manufacturer's approved product uses and cleaning-agent list in writing, and confirm that warranty terms apply to the project location.

Dimensions, accessibility and details

Counter heights must be considered alongside seated and standing users, staff ergonomics and local accessibility regulations. Instead of copying one universal dimension into every space, verify the user profile, service type and applicable requirements with the project team. A lowered welcome section, knee clearance or accessible payment point may be appropriate where required.

Show the front edge, corner radius, seams, wall upstands and cable routes on the drawing. If the counter includes a sink, beverage preparation or wet service, coordinate splash protection, water sealing and access to plumbing. Review samples for colour, veining direction, sheen and joint visibility before approving fabrication.

Cleaning, maintenance and ongoing operation

Hotel and restaurant counters may be cleaned daily with different products. The manufacturer's care guide for the selected surface should be compatible with the chemicals the operator uses. Before quotation, identify likely contact with coffee, oil, cosmetics, disinfectants or food. Include who cleans each area and how often in the operating plan.

Service hatches or removable panels may be needed to reach consumables, electrical connections and plumbing. Concealing those access points for appearance alone can increase future maintenance effort. Agree with the manufacturer and fabricator on the finish, support structure and repair method for corners or lower edges likely to receive impact.

How to plan fabrication and installation

Custom fabrication links the site survey, approved drawing, product supply, workshop production, delivery and installation. Ask for the scope of each stage and the decision deadlines in writing. Rough measurements taken before walls, floors or services are complete may require later adjustment; clarify when the final site measurement will occur.

Operating hours, loading access, lifts, doorway sizes, protection and whether service must pause during installation affect the schedule. Sharing these details early allows a more realistic site plan. Do not assume a warranty, delivery date or project duration before it is confirmed in the written quotation; scopes differ from one job to another.

Information to include in a quotation request

For an initial review, share the location, approximate dimensions, intended counter use, number of staff and visitors, operating hours, preferred material and colour, and any existing plan. Send dimensions with photographs or sketches if available; an inspiration image is not an approved fabrication drawing. Mention wet service, food contact, high heat or accessibility needs separately.

For comparable quotations, ask for the brand and product, surface quantity, edge and seam work, transport, installation, site survey, care documents and warranty scope as separate items. HMM Architecture can discuss the surface and application scope using these details. This guide is not a case study proving any particular client project, delivery time or result.
